Pre-register a sender ID

Register alphanumeric sender IDs for countries that require it under Settings > Compliance - currently Austria.

Some countries require sender IDs to be registered with an authority or with the mobile operators before you send. This usually concerns alphanumeric sender IDs, and in some countries phone numbers as well. You handle this pre-registration in the dashboard under Settings -> Compliance.

Austria is currently available there. More countries will follow as soon as the respective registries offer a comparable process.

Auf einen Blick

  • From 1 October 2026, Austria requires every alphanumeric sender ID to be listed in the public RTR directory.
  • Unregistered sender IDs are blocked or delivered as "Unknown" by the Austrian operators.
  • Registration runs through Settings -> Compliance. If fees apply, they are shown there.
  • The owner details, including the contact email address, are published in the public directory.
  • Every entry has to be submitted actively - creating it is not enough.

Why Austria

The Austrian regulator RTR maintains a public directory of all alphanumeric sender IDs. From 1 October 2026, Austrian operators will only deliver messages with the requested sender ID if that ID is listed in the directory. Otherwise the message is blocked or the sender is replaced with "Unknown".

In Austria, the requirement covers alphanumeric senders; purely numeric sender IDs cannot be registered there. In other countries, a phone number used as the sender may require registration as well.

Who can register

All roles can see the page, but only the owner and admin of the account can create and submit entries.

There are no other prerequisites: you do not have to create the sender ID under Settings -> Sender IDs first. The two areas are independent of each other.

Pre-filled entries

You may find entries under Compliance that you did not create yourself. These are sender IDs we observed in your previous traffic to Austria. Review and complete them - we do not know the owner details, so you have to add them.

Registering a sender ID

  1. Open Settings -> Compliance and click Register sender ID.
  2. In the first step, choose the destination country. If only one country is available, it is preselected.
  3. Fill in the form in the second step and save.
  4. Then submit the entry using Submit.

Step 4 matters: an entry that is saved but not submitted will not be registered.

Information requested

For Austria, all fields are mandatory:

Field Meaning
Sender ID The ID your recipients see as the sender
Owner (company/organization) The company or organization behind the sender ID
Street and house number Address of the owner
Postal code Postal code of the owner
City City of the owner
Country code The owner's country as a two-letter ISO code, for example DE
Owner contact email Published in the public directory
Registration reason Why you are entitled to the sender ID (see below)

The owner is the company or organization your recipients see as the sender - not necessarily the owner of your seven account. If you send on behalf of a client, enter that client's details.

Registration reason

Four reasons are available:

  • The sender ID matches the company or organization name
  • The sender ID is a registered trademark
  • The sender ID matches the company's internet domain
  • The sender ID is already in use by the company or brand

Choose the reason that applies to your sender ID.

Sender ID rules

The following requirements apply for Austria:

  • 3 to 11 characters
  • Letters, digits, spaces and +, -, _, & are allowed
  • No leading or trailing space, no leading +
  • Not purely numeric - if you want to use a phone number as the sender, add it under Sender IDs instead
  • Case matters: Acme and ACME are two different sender IDs and need two registrations

The sender ID has to make the owner identifiable. Generic terms such as "Info", "SMS" or "Service" are rejected by the directory.

Each combination of country and sender ID may only exist once. If you create a sender ID that already exists, the dashboard reports a conflict.

Publication of your data

Achtung

By submitting, you agree that the owner details - including the contact email address - are passed on to the destination country's registry and published there for anyone to see. Use a functional address such as info@your-domain.com rather than a personal mailbox.

Tracking the status

Every entry has a status:

Status Meaning
Incomplete Mandatory details are missing. The dashboard shows which ones.
Ready to submit All details are present, the entry has not been submitted yet.
Submitted The entry has been handed to us and goes to the registry with the next registration round.
Registered The sender ID is listed in the directory.
Rejected The registry turned the sender ID down. The reason is shown below the status.

We submit entries to the registry in batches and record the responses afterwards.

You are not notified about status changes by email. Check Settings -> Compliance from time to time after submitting.

Editing, deleting and withdrawing entries

  • You can edit an entry as long as it is incomplete, ready to submit or rejected. Once submitted, it is locked.
  • The sender ID itself cannot be changed afterwards. Delete the entry and create it again.
  • After a rejection, correct the details and submit again. The rejection reason disappears in the process.
  • You can withdraw a submission as long as it has not been registered - delete the entry to do so.
  • Registered entries can no longer be deleted. Contact support@seven.io in that case.

If you delete an entry, the sender ID is not registered. Messages using that sender to countries with a registration requirement may then be blocked.

Costs

Whether a registration costs anything depends on the destination country and the operator: some networks charge one-off or recurring fees, others register free of charge. If fees apply, they are shown to you in the dashboard.

What happens after registration

The status "Registered" means the sender ID is listed in the destination country's directory. Nothing changes in your account: you keep sending as before and you do not have to enable the sender ID anywhere else. The effect happens at the destination country's operators, which then recognize your sender ID as registered.

Frequently asked questions

I do not send to Austria at all - do I need to do anything? No. The registration requirement only applies to messages to Austrian recipients.

I use a phone number as the sender. Do I have to register? Not for Austria - only alphanumeric sender IDs are registered there. Some other countries do require registration for phone numbers as well. If in doubt, ask support@seven.io.

I use several sender IDs. Then create a separate entry for each one. There is no limit on the number of entries.

What happens if I miss the deadline? From 1 October 2026, messages with unregistered sender IDs are blocked in Austria or delivered with "Unknown" as the sender. You can still catch up on the registration afterwards.

For general background on registration requirements in other countries, see International SMS dispatch.
